Zamenis longissimus

The Aesculapian Snake is another rarely kept European species. It has a long history in tradition, being one of the snakes that is carried in the Festival of Saint Dominic Abbot in the Italian village of Cocullo. It is also associated with healing, being the species that is entwined around a staff on the traditional sign of medicine. Its common name is from the Greek god of healing, Aesculapius, who encouraged this species to live around his temples.
