The term 'Ratsnake' is one of dubious taxonomic value, an artificial pigeon hole that certain groups of animals may fall into. Some people would describe some snakes as Racers while others would happily proclaim them to be Ratsnake. This sites definition of 'Ratsnakes' are all animals that are currently or have been described as such, primarily species formerly described as Elaphe in the book written by K.D Schulz, 'A Monograph of the Colubrid Snakes of the Genus Elaphe (Fitzinger)'. We also have information on other snakes commonly described as 'Ratsnakes', such as Gonyosoma (Rhynchophis) boulengeri (Rhino Ratsnake), Ptyas, Spilotes & Spalerosophis species etc. as well as other colubrids.

Some information is readily available to view, whilst other requires you to register on the site, further there is a third layer where the information / articles are only available to view by the former Ratsnake Foundation 2014 membership and contributors to this site.

This site wouldn't be as informative without the guys and gals who have contributed to the various features, articles, photos, news items, snippets of information etc. Its to these I give a big thank you to, you guys ROCK.

Introduction
Two years ago, when I started keeping snakes, I bought several red-tailed ratsnakes, Gonyosoma oxycephalum. I thought they were very beautiful snakes, but many of the snake keepers I knew at the time told me that I was crazy. I was told that red-tailed ratsnakes were large and extremely aggressive snakes and that the species was difficult to keep. Now, after two years of working with the species, my opinion is that they are not at all difficult to keep and are not aggressive.
